For the exhibition ‘Handmade’ at the ‘Zuiderzeemuseum’ designer Merel Karhof lives in the skin of a lab-technician. In her ‘TanningLaboratory’ she explores new applications with the old Dutch tanning craft.
Formerly cotton fish nets where being tanned with cutch to prevent rotting. In her lab, Karhof shows large round scarves tailored to the size of the tanning cauldron to stools upholstered with fish skins tanned in cutch fluid and as well jewellery pieces, which celebrate the beauty of “raw” cutch.
